The term "Native Americans" is sometimes rejected in some circles due to the Bering Strait theory.

The Bering Strait theory is the belief that no modern group is truly native to the American continents. Instead, 20,000+ years ago, groups traveled across what was then the Bering Strait landmass and settled throughout the Americas.

Some groups, then, prefer the term "First Nations" as it refers to the groups correct heritage as the First Nations to settle the American subcontinents.
