Both the Democratic Party and the Federalists supported a strong central government. Both of them had the same thoughts that the central government would mostly form the country and control it. Both strongly opposed slavery. Both were formed because of a dispute.  And both were organized on federal and state levels.

The Democratic Party today wants the federal government to take a more active role in people's lives or in other words they want a stronger central government. In the past, the Federalists wanted a stronger central government as well.
