The Declaration of Independence is a document written by a committee of colonists in what is now the United States that laid out the reasons why the American colonies were leaving the UK.

Congress wanted Jefferson and others to write a declaration of independance. Why they needed this document to be made was so the colonies could not be under British rule anymore. In the declaration, Jefferson wrote that people have the right to live, the right to seek happiness, and the right to be free. In the declaration it also says that the people have rights that cannot be taken away from them.

Hope this helps!
