The five functions of saliva are listed below:
1. Saliva regulates and neutralizes the pH of the mouth.
2 Helps in break down of carbohydrates. The first step in digestion of carbohydrates begins in the mouth because of the presence of salivary amylase.
3. Saliva has bacteriocidal action via which it kills bacteria and other microorganisms present in the food.
4. Its lubricating action helps in better dissolving and swallowing of food bolus.
5. It helps maintain oral hygiene.
