Dogs were very important during the Klondike Gold Rush. Sled dogs were used to help carry and get resources such as food, clothing, and equipment for mining that people needed to survive. They were also good hunting companions which was another way to get food with the dogs’ help. Once the gold was found the dog sleds helped transport it back to their camps.The harsh northern winters made sled dogs necessary because humans would not survive without them in these kinds of conditions. Sled dogs were able to travel through snow, across ice, and frozen rivers so this was the best way to travel. They were also used to help take mail and key information to towns near the gold fields. They were able to run long distances which help when there was critical information to deliver. The dogs have to be strong with thick coats to protect them from the cold.
