Another change was that the Soviet Union became a police state. People could not express views in opposition to Stalin and the government, because if they did, they were punished in several ways, from fines, to forced labor in gulags, to forced disappearance and execution.

This made life better for poorer people and was a step towards abolishing classes, but the rich people often suffered because they would be banished or imprisoned or things like that and they would have their properties taken away from them
