color was a very big milestone in film industry, as it mimics life more realistically than black and white does. but i also think that CGI (computer-generated imagery) was monumental because CGI can save lots of money on production costs. without CGI, everything is built in reality on a giant set rather than artificially creating the set through CGI. and it also just makes a film more realistic and interesting, there's just so many more possibilities.
