Positive means a stimulus is applied, negative means the stimulus is withheld

a punishment is made negative because you are punished when you do something wrong, so you are restricted from doing things you like, like for boys, no video games, lol.  A reward is made positive because when you get a reward, like a new video game,  it means you have done something good to please someone, and you are given more privilege's.
