The two men who arranged the purchase of the Louisiana territory were Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon Bonaparte.

By the 18th century, France controlled a great part of the present-day United States.

In 1803 the United States paid $27.267,622 to France and purchased Louisiana territory.

The treaty was dated April 30 and signed on May 2. Therefore, in December 1803 France transferred authority over the region to the United States.

After the treaty was signed, a dispute soon arose regarding the boundaries, which were finally set in 1806 after an expedition.
