Frank bought 6 pens and 3 highlighters in the school store and paid $21 for the whole purchase. His friend , Andy paid $19 for 2 pens and 4 highlighters. If all pens cost the same and all highlighter cost the same, what is the price of one pen?

Solving the above linear equations by elimination method:-

( 6p  +  3h  = 21 ) x 2

( 2p  +  4 h = 19 ) x 6

The new equations are:-

12p  + 6h  =  42

12p  + 24h  = 114

Substracting the below equation from the above equation we will get:-

6h - 24h  =  -72

-18 h = -72

h  =  $4

Put the value of h in any of the above equations:-

2p  +  4 h = 19

2p  +  4 ( 4 )  = 19

2p  +  16  =  19

p  =  3 / 2

P  = $1.5

Therefore the price of one pen will be $1.5 and one highlighter is $4.
