When William Henry Harrison passed away from pneumonia, his name quickly became more than just a catchy rhyme on the Whig ticket. He was the party's vice presidential nominee under Harrison. The country was now left to determine precisely what kind of man was currently in the presidency. The Whigs soon learned that Tyler was a Democrat in heart who was a Whig in disguise.

Tyler was at conflict with the dominant Clay-Webster group on a number of significant topics, including the bank, protective tariffs, and internal improvements. Tyler had recently left the Democrat party and started his relationship with the Whigs. John Tyler subsequently became the "President without a Party" due to the conflict within the Whig Party, as "His Accidency" would later claim.
