Dissidents may hinder the fighting effort during a period of conflict. The First Amendment does not shield speech that might offend other Americans. In addition, even unpopular speech should be protected under the first amendment. Other Americans are not put in risk when they speak out against a war. People should have the freedom to disagree with the government in a democracy. Speech that decried the war effort in World War I was prohibited by the Espionage and Sedition Acts of 1917. Americas were put in prison after being charged with and found guilty of opposing the war. Speaking out against war does not in any way endanger Americans; everyone is entitled to their own ideas.
