Pepsin is the enzyme that digests or breaks down proteins in the stomach. Cells called gastric chief cells secrete pepsin as an inactive zymogen thats called pepsinogen. The parietal cells inside your stomach lining emit hydrochloric acid that lowers your pH inside your stomach. Once the pH is low, it activates pepsin. A low pH can be considered 1.5 to 2.
