The Presidential election of 1980 was very critical given the difficult times that the United States had been facing in previous years, especially the 1970´s. Economic difficulties, lack of job opportunities, the rise of oil prices and lack of oil supply due to the crisis with Iran, among many other social and political issues, led the then President, Jimmy Carter, who was running again for re-election in 1980, to lose the race to Ronald Reagan, who became the 49th President of the United States and with whom a whole new era of conservatism, called the Reagan era, arose. So, in essence, what led Republican candidate Ronald Reagan to beat the then running President Jimmy Carter was the A: high inflation that resulted from the economic challenges the U.S faced before and during the 1980´s.
