The best way to refuse his friends pressure of asking this girl out would be to tell his friends that he is too busy to go out on a date. If he asks the girl out he is giving in to their pressure, if he tells his friends that he will ask her out later then he is making a commitment to ask her out and his friends will continue to ask him if he has asked her out yet and if he asks the girl out and then he tells her it was a joke she will feel terrible, so no.
