Question number 5 please. I wrote it down if you can't see the whole question from the photos.
5. Figure 3.33 shows the Millau viaduct in south-western France. The viaduct wasa designed by the structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and Norman Foster Associates, in 2004.

Figure 3.4 shows the Iron Bridge in Shropshire, England. The bridge was completed in 1779.

The table below gives some specifications for the different bridges.

The tensile strength of a material is the maximum load that a material can support without fracture when being stretched, divided by the original cross-sectional area of the material.

The compressive strength is the capacity of a material or structure to withstand loads tending to reduce size, also expressed as the force per cross-sectional area.

What designs have been used for each of the bridges?

For each of the bridge shapes, sketch force arrows to show how a load placed at the centre of a span would be distributed or ‘spread out’ by the structure. Show on your diagram where:

The structure is in tension, or being stretched

The structure is in compression, or being squashed.

One steel cable of the Millau viaduct is made from an average of seven strands of steel cable, and each stand is 1cm in diameter. Calculate

The load required to break one of the steel cables.

The compressive strength of one of the steel cables.

One strut (beam) of the Iron Bridge is around 0.25m x 0.25 m. Calculate

The load required to break one of the struts

The compressive strength of one of the steel cables.

With reference to your calculations and to the force diagrams you drew in b above, evaluate how the form of the Iron Bridge and of the Milau viaduct is determined by the materials used in each.
