A tariff generally refers to a type of tax imposed internationally. Tariffs come in many forms, and one example of a tariff imposition would be the Boston Tea Party. Because colonists decided to throw tea into the ocean in 1773, the British Parliament retaliated with an additional charge on importing and exporting tea sales.
