In the late 1960's the first workable prototype of the Internet was developed with the creation of the Advanced Reasearch Projects Agency Networks (ARPANET). This was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, it's main purpose was to bring computing to the front lines. Although it was in a lot of ways an archaic Internet, it helped set the first bases and rules for it's usage, transforming over the years and becoming an escential part of modern communications.
