During the Great Depression, the U.S. economy went into crisis and the employment rate dramatically fell. The New Deal programs were created to help the economy recover during these times. Under this policy, the government made agencies to put people back to work. Some of those agencies were the Civilian Conservation Corps (1933) that gave millions of young men employment on environmental projects, such as planting trees and constructing trails and shelters; the Works Progress Administration (1935) that employed mostly unskilled men to carry out public works projects, such as the construction of public buildings and roads; and the Tennessee Valley Authority (1933) that provided jobs and electricity to the rural Tennessee River Valley.
