Protection of these animals is generally aimed at several specific characteristics where the animals are threatened with extinction ie
- Barely extinct, where the critical level and habitat has become narrow so that the number is in critical condition.
- Leading to extinction, i.e. its population is declining due to overexploitation and destruction of its habitat.
- Rarely, the population decreases.
