First light passes through the lens. But then the retina is where the initial step of vision occurs in the eye. The retina receives the visual information via light waves and converts this to neurotransmitters to send to the brain in order for proper decoding of the visual information. The retina is really the first place of interaction between the light and the interpretation of it occurs.

The process that happens in the retina is absorption of Light by Photo pigments.  In the eyes light enters through the aperture called the iris. It go through the lens of the eye (a clear, doubly convex construct that is attached to muscles that make it fatter or thinner in order to focus the light) and hits the retina. In the retina there are rods and cones. The rods sense degrees of light and dark (black and white) and the cones sense colors.
