A cantilevered floor is a kind of floor that pops out past the foundation wall below.  Start the joist layout from the longest and strongest run the house or building has. You should also lay floor joists on the stairway's opposing side. Also, remember the 2/3 rule for framing cantilever joists. This means that twice the joist's length should remain inside the structure while the rest sticks out.
