If it is June or July, then the Earth is nearly as far away from the
sun as it ever gets ... the absolute farthest is at some moment
during the first 2 or 3 days in July.  But that has practically no
effect on temperatures. 

That's also the time when the tilt of Earth's axis places the northern
hemisphere "leaning forward" toward the sun, so to speak. 
The result of THAT is that the northern hemisphere receives the
most direct solar rays of the year.  Average daily temperatures are
the highest of the year, and ... in one of the greatest climatological
coincidences ... this all happens during the part of the year that we
call "Summer".
