The medulla oblongata and pons are the two hindbrain and midbrain structures that are a part of the brainstem. The pons contains neural connections or tracts that help in information exchange between the cerebellum, thalamus and the cerebrum. The lower part of the medulla oblongata or medulla however connects to the spinal cord, as an extension of the brainstem. The medulla oblongata performs the function of regulation of respiration, breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
