Poetry and prose vary mostly in their structure. Prose has sentences and is organized in paragraphs. On the other hand, poetry often takes the form of stanzas. However, they also share several similarities:

  • Both use a lot of the same literary devices, such as symbolism, metaphor, similes, and hyperboles.
  • Both try to convey a message.
  • Both often use rhyme and repetition to establish a rhythm.
  • Both can vary greatly in length.
  • Both deal with many different topics, and  there is no subject that is exclusively addressed by one type of writing.
