Let x be the number of stamps Charlie has and y be the number of stamps Ryan has.

Then you can replace the x in the first equation and get
[tex]2160 = 5y + y \\ 2160 = 6y \\ y = 2160 \div 6 \\ y = 360[/tex]

the toal stamps combined is 2160, hence

x + 5x = 2160

6x = 2160 ( divide both sides by 6 )
