William Graham Sumner was one of the best recognized American sociologists, who taught in Yale University for several years, and also became a Deacon in his time. Sumner was a firm believer that socialism, and that constant focus on helping out the poor by the rich, and the responsibility towards the poor, was returning Europe to a barbaric time. What he strongly supported, was, strong work, instead of charity, for people to improve themselves. In essence, he believed that those who remained poor did so because they were not working hard enough, or were incapable, of tailoring their futures. This viewpoint, although not directly derived from Social Darwinism, does follow some of its structures, as this theory expounds that economically and socially, only the fittest survive.
