MY response [worded and written by ME]:

Changes from a domesticate dog to a wild dog. Buck was a lazy, pampered dog who was owned by a judge. Buck was a pet. But after he was stolen and sold, Buck learned the tricks and trade of living by himself - trusting no-one and fighting for his own survival. In the end, he went from a lazy pet, to an alert, aware, wild dog. After John Thornton dies, he is finally wild and free, tied down to no human. And he is free to explore and adventure.

Edge-nuity response:

In the beginning of the novel, Buck is a pet. He learns how to survive by relying on his instincts and fighting to live. After Thornton dies, Buck becomes completely wild. He no longer is connected to people, and he returns to his wild brothers, the wolves.
