Unit rates are everywhere. When you buy large packs from the grocery store, you see a huge price. What you also see is the unit price (how much each individual thing is). This is important because you could possibly get another deal if the individual item is too expensive or cheap.

Unit rates can be used to help compare deals when it comes to shopping. For example, let's say we have two deals

Deal A: Buy 4 apples for $12

Deal B: Buy 5 apples for $14

Which is the better deal? Which deal offers the lower price per apple? To find out, we divide each dollar amount by its corresponding number of apples

Unit rate for deal A: 12/4 = 3 dollars per apple

Unit rate for deal B: 14/5 = 2.80 dollars per apple

So even though deal B costs more overall, we have a cheaper cost per apple making it a better deal

Unit rates can also apply to speed as well. If person A paints 10 objects in 2 hours, then they paint at a speed of 10/2 = 5 objects per hour. In other words, if one hour goes by, then they painted one whole object. We can compare this to another worker person B. If they paint 12 objects in 3 hours then 12/3 = 4 is the number of objects they paint per hour. We see that person A is the faster painter per hour.
