After studying French for 5 yearscin school, i was shocked to discover when I went to france that I couldn't even get a glass of water without a lot of sign language what is the author main point

The author’s main point was to state that expectation isn’t always reality.

So, if he studied French for 5 years, then went to France and learned they use a lot of sign language. Then he was probably in cultural shock.
