Dear Editor,

Lately, many people have complained about a new neighborhood law that has recently gone into effect. The law requires that people have all dogs on a leash unless they are safely within a fenced yard or in the house. Most people are following the new law, but a few go out walking and let their dogs run freely along with them. Some let their dogs run freely throughout the neighborhood all day and all night. I would like to encourage these people to begin respecting the leash law. If they will think about it, they will understand why keeping a dog on a leash is a good idea. For one thing, dogs on a leash won't be able to leave unwelcome messes in innocent neighbors' yards. Also, some of our neighbors are frightened of dogs. None of them should have to be afraid to go out for an evening walk if they want to. Most important, dogs on a leash can't run out into the street in front of cars. Responsible, loving pet owners should be happy to do all they can to keep their animals safe. Next time any of you think of sending your dog out into the neighborhood with no leash, please stop a minute to think about the chance you're taking with your neighbors and your pets!

Sincerely,
Mr. John Nabors
