Sarah E. Goode was the first African-American woman to receive a United States patent in 1885. She was an entrepreneur and inventor and she invented a folding cabinet bed for people who lived in small, cramped spaces with not enough room to put in both, a bed and a desk/ storage unit.
When the bed was folded, it looked like a desk, with room for storage. The challenge was to make the bed easy to lift up in order to fold and unfold it. She provided additional support to the centre of the bed when it was unfolded.
