The main fonction of that tube that connects the middle-ear to the naso-pharynx is to regulate the pression between the inner ear and the environment. If the pressure is not equalized, your hearing will be affected. That's what happens for example when you take-off of land in a plane... or when taking a fast elevator moving up to down 40 floors rapidly.

To equalize the pression, we use different techniques to open that tube/canal that is normally closed, like yawning, chewing gum and so on, this makes some specific muscles around the tube to work and open the tube.
