Important evidence can be established from bugs, flies, worms and maggots found on the dead body. They can be the first-line clues in pinpointing the location and time of death. Did the victim die where the body was found or was it taken there?
The forensic examiner can estimate if the victim died where the body was found or if it was taken there, by collecting and examining the presence of insects and eggs in the moist open wounds (stab wounds or bullet entry). Their species vary from place to place.
If for example, the body is found in New York City but exhibits signs of infestation seen only in the countryside, it is likely the killing took place in the country and the body was moved after death.
