Slate is a natural stone that splits easily into thin sheets. A sheet of slate can be cut into shingles that provide excellent protection against rain and melting snow, and it is very dense and hard, therefore it is highly resistant to being reshaped or damaged by weather. Sandstone can be broken into flat layers that can then be broken into squared-off chances. These pieces of squared-off sandstone serve well in construction of walls for buildings.
