No matter what race back in early america divorce was considered taboo because bibles listed divorces as a sin. ( I am just stating my knowledge of the history of early American religions, meaning isn't my personal opinion nor do I support this ideal)

Man and women married as the beliefs and customs of the colonial times dictated. But short lifespans were common in that time due to many cases. So when husband or wife died, remarriage was the next step. Southern people kept on living and taking care of the big plantations and producing the cash crops so needed for their economy.
