This all changed when general Touissaint L'Ouverture, an ex slave, steeped up and organized the people in order to gain independence. It was not just the slaves that stood on the side of the rebellion, but there were also people of European descent from multiple ethnic groups.

The French were not at their best military when the rebellion broke down, and L'Ouverture knew that very well, so he chose the right time. Despite the majority of the rebellions being peasants and agricultural workers, L'Overture managed to organize them very well, set discipline among them, and make good tactics for fighting against the superior French army.

The rebellion lasted for 13 years, and the end result was that Haiti gained independence, so the everyone in the new nation was free, the slavery ended, and the French colony was no more.
