The osteolcast perform the crucial function of maintenance and repair of vertebral bones. They ate found in pits in bone surfaces. Osteoclast secretes acid and collagenase which facilitates bone resorption.

The initial process is the breakdown of mineralized bone into fragments. These fragments are engulfed by the osteoplast and the fragments are digested in the cytoplasmic vacoules.

The breakdown of  mineralized bone releases calcium and phosphorous into the blood stream.  Unmineralised bone is called osteoid and it doesn’t undergo resorption.
