This heat energy is converted to kinetic energy of molecules of the substance. The molecules of the substance will vibrate rapidly with increase of heat. The molecules also collides more rapidly and some of the kinetic energy is lost again as heat to the environment because most the collisions are inelastic. Due to increased kinetic energy and high energy collisions, the molecules move further apart from each other and the substance begins to melt or evaporate.

No energy is created or destroyed in the process, it is only converted from one form to another according to the first law of thermodynamics.
