Ways to correctly use a colon:
•to introduce an item or list (ex. she has three favorite animals: elephants, hippos, and rhinos.)
•to connect two directly correlating sentences (ex. The painting at the museum looked remarkable: the use of color and brush strokes was beautiful.)
•to introduce a bulleted or numbered list (ex. the format of answer -- ways to correctly use a colon: ...)
•to introduce a quote (ex. Jimmy directly states in his book that he thinks pigs are hideous creatures: "I was walking down the street one day as I saw the odd sight of a farmer walking his pig on a leash. I snarled, for I always thought pigs were visually horrendous animals")
•to propose a formal greeting in a letter (ex. Dear Mr. Creole: ...)
