It helps our ego part of personality to act morally than realistically. This means even if reality is on our side but still we have to act morally, reality may be that you have a lot of money but still you have to act morally in spending it.
The Parts of the Superego
Superego is divided into two components which are ego ideal and the conscience.
The ego ideal is what guides us through following the rules and standards of acceptable behavior. This means doing things that can be approved by our parents and authority figures.
