Fermentation does not occur in the cell membrane, it occurs in the cytosol of the cell. Diffusion and Osmosis is the movement of particles across a semi-permeable membrane (ie cell membrane). Phagocytosis involves the cell membrane because the cell membrane encloses bacteria or particles into a vacuole made by the cell membrane, and that vacuole is released into the cell for digestion.
