The unit discusses how expensive prisons are and the strain this can put on state or local

budgets. One possibility to counteract this expense would be to help prisons give back

to the community. How did Pacholke and the rainforest ecologist that he met do

exactly that and allow prisons and inmates to help advance science and give back to the

community?

Respuesta :

Dan Pacholke and the rainforest ecologist introduced innovative and sustainable projects into the prison environment. Prisoners are exposed to environmental education and introduced to projects such as recycling, organic gardening, rainfall catchment.

Inmates learn about and complete projects on repopulating endangered frog species. The prison educated inmates about and installed solar panels around the prison.

This gives inmates a sense of purpose, contributes to the advancement of science and allows a give back to the community.
