Therefore his goals aren't about the homework at all, he really just wants to chat it up with the woman. Maybe get her number, perhaps flirt with her, etc.

The actor playing the young man therefore will show this subtext in his performance, so when the scene starts and he asks about homework, his tone will be flirty and chatty.
