You first factor the numerator out, which gets you (x+6)(x+2). Then you factor the denominator, which gets you (x-4)(x+2). You know have the answer for the x-values for which the expression is undefined. A 0 cannot be in the denominator, so, if x was equal to 4 or -2, there would be a 0. So x=/=-2, 4.


For simplifying, cancel out the (x+2) as it divided by itself equals 1. Now you’re left with (x+6)/(x-4).
