NATO was formed as a deterrence to Russian military actions in Europe during the Cold War to deter Communist invasion. East Germany was controlled by Russia and West Germany was its own nation in NATO. Both were on opposing sides until Germany reunited after the USSR was dissolved. Ireland was never really important and just ...... Existed.
