The Patriots were the Americans and they opposed the British due to issues regarding taxation. They weren’t represented by the British and therefore didn’t deem it fit to be remitting taxes t them .
This opposition led them to go into war with the British navy. Although the patriots army were inexperienced, they were on home soil which was an advantage while the British army lacked the vital equipment and it eventually led to the Patriots winning the war which led to their independence.
