PURE SUBSTANCE:

  • A pure substance is any substance that contains a fixed proportion of chemical constituents. There are two major types of pure substances namely: elements and compounds.

  • Elements are pure substances that contain only one type of atom. For example; oxygen (O2) contains only oxygen atom, Hydrogen (H2) contains only hydrogen atom etc.

  • Compounds are pure substances made up of two or more elements that are joined together via chemical bonds. For example, NaCl is made up of sodium and chlorine joined together by ionic bond.

A distinguishable feature of pure substances is that they cannot be broken down by chemical means.
