It may occur that in literary works the life and experiences of the author is reflected in the story they create. Through characters and at times their actions, the readers are able to gain a deeper understanding of the author and perhaps their internal emotions and struggles. In the story “Popular Mechanics” Raymond Carver writes a short story of conflict arising between a married couple as the husband tries to leave his wife. It is through knowing a little more about Carver’s life that the reader sees the biographical connections between the story and his first marriage. By analyzing the setting, the departure of the husband, and the fight over the baby in “Popular Mechanics,” one begins to understand Carver’s feeling about the end of his first marriage.
