Sound are waves traveling to substances. You can hear from a greater distance in water than in air, because the waves carry over to other particles. More space inbetween means it takes more time. Sound is created when something vibrates, and can get stronger when other objects resonate.

Sound is the name of the term that describes mechanical waves. These mechanical waves are produced through vibration. Then, it uses particle to particle interaction to pass on the effect of the original vibration. This is where the concept of ‘Sound needs matter to travel ‘ comes into action, because these particles are only present in what they call ‘matter’. The effect of vibration, is then, carried on from one particle to another, to another and so on till it ultimately reaches the receiver.

Hope this helps.
